Avoiding Disaster

New England winters can be harsh and every year insurance companies deal with thousands of dollars in damages from losses to seasonal and vacation properties. Frozen pipes, water damage and roof damage can all be pervented with just a few precautions.

If you plan to close up your property for the season shut off the main water supply and drain your pipes. That includes flushing all the water from toilets and tanks.

Set thermostats to a minimum of 55 degrees

Open cabinets and closets to let warm air circulate and avoid pipe freezes.

Make arrangements to have snow removed from driveway, walk ways and roof. Removing snow from areas like walkways and driveways will give the appearance someone is there and deter vandals and break ins. Removing snow from your roof will prevent water damage caused by ice build up, otherwise known as ice dams.

Have a trusted friend or neighbor check the interior and exterior of your home on a regular basis. Regular checks can recognize or even stop costly damages before they happen.
